An anniversary isn’t just a date: it’s celebrating everything you’ve lived together. And if there’s a country made to celebrate love, it’s Italy — history in every stone, breathtaking landscapes, the best table in the world and romance on every corner. It’s no coincidence that it’s the destination most couples choose to reconnect with what brought them together.
Here’s the important part: there is no single “perfect route.” The ideal anniversary trip is built to measure, and it depends on four things — the time of year, the budget, the couple’s tastes and, above all, whether you already know Italy or it’s your first time. So instead of giving you a fixed itinerary, we share our favorite places in Italy for an anniversary and how to combine them into the perfect route for you (usually within a maximum of 12 nights). At Vilu we’ve designed hundreds of these trips; here’s what we know.
How your perfect route comes together
Four factors decide the itinerary. The season: April, May and October are our favorite months (more on that at the end). The budget: there are spectacular, accessible regions, and others —like the Amalfi Coast in high season— that are an investment. The tastes: a couple wanting adventure and mountains isn’t the same as one wanting sea, art, fashion or gastronomy. And the factor that most defines an anniversary: is it your first time in Italy, or do you already know it? If it’s the first, we go for the unmissable classics; if you’ve been before, we take you to the jewels with a different essence, less crowded.
Our favorite places in Italy for an anniversary
Venice. The most romantic city in the world. Magical, unrepeatable: alleys, bridges, canals, centuries of history and love. Venice, quite simply, is romance.
Verona. The city of Romeo and Juliet — is there anything more romantic? Its Roman Arena, the opera under the stars, its squares. Stunning in every sense.
Lake Garda. A step from Verona, the Garda shore and its little towns offer a more local, authentic feel than Lake Como (which has become much more touristy). Spectacular in summer, but also a beautiful autumn and winter destination.
Milan and Lake Como. Milan is fashion, elegance and sophistication: the heritage of the great Italian designers, The Last Supper, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, the Duomo — and the Monza Grand Prix nearby. Beside it, Lake Como, so elegant and famous, with towns as beautiful as Bellagio.
Turin, Barolo and Alba. Turin surprises with its great Egyptian Museum. And to the south, the Alba area and the Barolo vineyards produce some of Italy’s finest wines. A high point for wine lovers.
Liguria: Portofino and Cinque Terre. A magical riviera with landscapes that recall the Amalfi Coast, but with a different essence: more boutique, smaller, far less crowded. Best enjoyed from April to October, with warm, pleasant weather.
The Dolomites. For couples seeking adventure. In summer, a must: kayaking, biking and views that don’t look real. In winter, Bolzano, Cortina and the area’s towns are among the best places in the world to ski, with top-tier hotels like the Aman Rosa Alpina. Spectacular in both seasons.
Emilia-Romagna. The paradise of two Italian passions: cars (the great factories are here) and, above all, food — the best in all of Italy. Home of Parmigiano-Reggiano, balsamic vinegar, prosciutto and salame di Parma, and authentic Bolognese.
Tuscany and Florence. Magical like few places: endless vineyards, storybook towns, golden hills at sunset and Florence — unique, unique, unique. The heart of the Renaissance.
Rome. The Eternal City, with all its history: the Vatican as the great attraction, the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and structures thousands of years old. Few things are as romantic as walking Rome at night.
Amalfi Coast. From April to October. It’s expensive, yes, but there’s nothing like it: Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi, Ravello. And the ultimate experience, renting a private yacht to sail to Capri and the Blue Grotto.
Puglia and Matera. Italy’s “heel” that makes you fall in love: Polignano a Mare on the cliffs, Alberobello and its trulli, Bari, white towns and incredible seas. Nearby, Matera, the astonishing city carved into the rock. Another Italy, more authentic and surprising.

Suggested routes for you (max. 12 nights)
If it’s your first time in Italy (the classics): Rome → Tuscany/Florence → Amalfi Coast. The must-sees, at their best.
If you already know Italy (jewels with a different essence): Venice → Verona → Lake Garda; or the elegant north: Milan → Lake Como → Liguria (Portofino and Cinque Terre).
For the adventurers: the Dolomites (summer in the mountains or winter skiing), combined with Venice or Verona.
For the foodies: Emilia-Romagna → Tuscany → Langhe (Barolo and Barbaresco).
For the south and the sea: Amalfi Coast + Capri; or Puglia + Matera for something more intimate and authentic.
The anniversary experiences that make the difference
What turns a trip into the unforgettable anniversary are the private, exclusive moments. Here are some of the ones we design:
The Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel with early access, before they open to the public and away from the crowds, in Rome. A private yacht on the Amalfi Coast, cruising among coves, crystal-clear caves and the Blue Grotto on the way to Capri. A private cruise through Cinque Terre, Portofino and the Gulf of Poets, on the Italian Riviera. St. Mark’s after closing, in Venice: exclusive access, just the two of you with a guide, among the golden mosaics and the crypt. An exclusive cocktail at the Scala Contarini del Bovolo, Venice’s secret staircase. An exclusive rooftop dinner in Bellagio, overlooking Lake Como at sunset, by candlelight. The Uffizi by night and a boat ride on the Arno River, in Florence. The Milan Duomo after hours, in private. Barolo and Barbaresco tastings in Langhe and a Chianti Safari by Land Rover through the Tuscan vineyards.
And many more — we design each experience to fit the anniversary.
The best season
Our favorite months are April, May and October: pleasant weather, fewer people and a better budget. July and August bring intense heat and crowds, especially in the south. The Amalfi Coast and Liguria shine from April to October. And the Dolomites are the perfect exception: spectacular in summer for the mountains and in winter for skiing.
“We celebrated our 25 years in Italy, and Vilu built a route so tailored to us that it felt like the whole country was made for the two of us.”
Frequently asked questions about an anniversary trip to Italy
How many nights do we need?
We usually design it within a maximum of 12 nights. There’s no single route: it’s built around the season, the budget, your tastes and whether you already know Italy.
What changes if we already know Italy?
A lot. If it’s your first time, we go for the classics (Rome, Tuscany, Amalfi). If you’ve been before, we take you to jewels with a different essence and fewer crowds: Garda, Verona, boutique Liguria, Puglia and Matera, or the Dolomites.
What’s the best season?
April, May and October, for weather, price and fewer people. The Dolomites, additionally, in winter for skiing.
What makes an anniversary designed by Vilu special?
The private, exclusive experiences — from the Vatican Museums before opening to a private yacht in Amalfi or an exclusive dinner in Bellagio — designed just for the two of you.
