Many parents believe travel goes “on pause” once children arrive. The truth is the opposite: you can travel beautifully with young children, even from when they are babies. The trip simply changes style — it’s not the same as when it was just the couple, nor the same as with older kids, but it can be just as memorable, and often more so.

The difference between a relaxed family trip and an exhausting one is almost never the destination: it’s the logistics. How the day is built, what kind of activities you choose, where you sleep, how much you walk and how you fly. At Vilu we have designed hundreds of trips with young children, and we know that when the logistics are well thought out, the complications disappear and only the enjoyment remains. Here is exactly how it works.

Logistics change with the type of trip

A beach or resort trip is not the same as a city trip, nor the same as a cultural or adventure trip. Each type has its own logic when you travel with young children, and understanding this before you book is what makes all the difference.

Beach and resort trips: the simplest format

For the first trips with young children, a beach resort is usually the most comfortable option. The pace is naturally relaxed, everything is in one place, and you don’t have to keep moving from point to point with a baby in tow.

If the resort has a kids club, the experience changes completely. Parents can spend the morning with the family and, in the afternoon, leave the children at the kids club —in good hands and having fun— to slip away for a walk, enjoy the spa, or book an adults’ dinner at night. It’s the way to feel like a couple again without ceasing to be a family.

And even if the resort has no kids club, that’s fine: those unhurried days of rest together are exactly where the best moments of togetherness and the bonding between parents and children are created. Sometimes the best memory of a trip isn’t a tour, but an afternoon by the pool as a family. Ideal destinations for this: the Riviera Maya and the Mexican Caribbean (short flights from Mexico), the Caribbean islands, and family resorts in places like the Maldives or Hawaii for those wanting something farther away.

City trips (Europe, the United States and beyond)

Cities are surprisingly friendly with young children, mainly for one reason: the stroller. In places like Europe or the United States you can explore the city with the stroller without complications, and if the baby still doesn’t walk well or tires quickly, they simply ride comfortably while the parents keep exploring. Sidewalks, transport and museums are usually ready for it.

The key here is the rhythm of the day (we cover it next): cities like Paris, Rome, London or New York are best enjoyed in short doses, weaving squares, parks and ice cream stops between one activity and the next.

Cultural and adventure trips: the ones that need more care

This is where you have to think it through, especially with children aged 0 to 3. At that age children barely walk long distances, so on many stretches the parents end up carrying them. On a cultural or adventure trip with a lot of walking, ups and downs, that becomes tiring.

That’s why, with such young children, we recommend choosing calmer activities, with little climbing up and down, to avoid the strain and the risk of back, knee and ankle injuries for parents from carrying the child for hours. It doesn’t mean giving up culture or nature: it means choosing the right experiences and pacing them. As children grow and walk on their own, this kind of trip opens up enormously.

The rhythm of the day: the golden rule

Regardless of the type of trip, there’s a rule that always applies with young children: no marathon days. Activities shouldn’t run more than three or four hours straight; beyond that, children get worn out (and everyone with them).

The format that works best: a short 3-4 hour activity in the morning, lunch, back to the hotel to rest or nap, and out again in the afternoon for a calm stroll. That mid-afternoon break is what keeps everyone —children and parents— in a good mood for the rest of the day.

Flying with babies: how the cost works

A key point of logistics —and of budget— is flights. From 0 to 2 years, babies fly as a “lap infant”, that is, seated on a parent’s lap, and normally only pay the taxes on the ticket, not the full fare. Once they turn 2 (counted as of the travel date), they pay for a ticket like any adult, with their own seat.

There’s an important detail: not every seat on the plane allows you to hold a lap infant, because of the oxygen-mask configuration (and, in some cases, the wall bassinets are limited). The seats enabled to fly with a baby are few, so it’s best to book in advance: if they sell out, the airline may not be able to sell you those seats.

And if, even between 0 and 2 years, you’d rather the baby travel in their own seat —more comfortable on long flights, or to install an approved car seat— then that ticket is paid like an adult’s. It’s a comfort-versus-budget decision we help you weigh depending on the flight.

From what age? How it changes with the child

Babies (0-1 year). It’s doable, though the trip is more for the parents than for the baby; the biggest challenge is the flight. A stroller and a good base hotel make it manageable.

Toddlers (1-3 years). The stage that demands the most logistics: they walk little, tire quickly and need naps. Beach/resort and cities with a stroller are ideal; cultural and adventure, in moderation.

Preschoolers (3-6 years). They start walking more and enjoying sensory experiences —beaches, animals, parks, trains—. The range opens up, always keeping the short rhythm.

The value of planning with Vilu

This is where a Travel Designer makes all the difference. Traveling with young children has many variables —flights at good times and with the right seats, hotels with a crib and enough space, activities of the right length, stress-free transfers, kid-friendly restaurants— and we take care of every one of them.

At Vilu we are experts in the logistics of traveling with young children. We anticipate the complications before they appear so you only have to worry about enjoying. The style of the trip changes when there are little ones, yes —but with the right planning it’s still an extraordinary journey.

“We traveled with our two-year-old and, thanks to the logistics Vilu put together, it was the most relaxed trip we’ve ever taken.”

Frequently asked questions about traveling with young children

From what age can you travel with young children?

From when they’re babies. What changes is the style of the trip, not whether it’s possible. With the right logistics, you can travel beautifully at any age.

What kind of trip is easiest with young children?

Beach and resort trips, especially those with a kids club. Cities are very manageable thanks to the stroller. Cultural or adventure trips need more care with children aged 0 to 3 because of the carrying.

How many hours of activity a day are recommended?

Ideally three to four hours, then lunch and back to the hotel to rest, and out again in the afternoon. Long days wear children out.

Do babies pay for a plane ticket?

From 0 to 2 years they fly as lap infants paying only taxes; from age 2 (as of the travel date) they pay like an adult. If you want a baby aged 0 to 2 to travel in their own seat, that ticket is paid in full.
